ELLEN L. DAUFNEY

Ellen L. Daufney, 96, of Grand Rapids died peacefully in her sleep on Oct. 9, 2004 at Grand Village Nursing Home in Grand Rapids.

She was born on April 1, 1908 in Culver Township, Minn.

She grew up on a farm in Meadowlands, Minn., and attended elementary school in Meadowlands and high school in Virginia. Completing Duluth State Teachers College and earning a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Minnesota, Duluth with minors in social studies and art, she was an elementary teacher for 38 years. She taught in Prairie Lake, Brookston and Cotton, and her last 25 years of teaching were in Calumet.

Married to Byron Daufney in Calumet in June, 1941, she lived there until 1974 when she moved to Grand Rapids. Byron died in 1969. Ellen traveled extensively, visiting every continent except Antarctica and every major county other than Russia. She especially enjoyed visiting Austria and Norway. In Africa, she went on a safari and slept in the bush. For 24 years, she spent winters in Hawaii. She was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church, the Eastern Star, a retired member of the American Red Cross Volunteers, the Senior Singers and the Itasca Committee on Aging. Under her direction, the Daufney Trust Fund Scholarship was established in 1986, which provides scholarships to students from Greenway High School to attend Itasca Community College. In 1972, she was chosen as the Itasca County Teacher of the year.

Preceding Ellen in death were her husband, Byron E. Daufney; parents, August Jochim and Lydia Koskinen Jochim; one sister, Louise Garland; and a nephew, Daniel Garland.

Surviving family includes one sister, Ann Borken of Duluth; and a nephew, Dr. Richard Borken of Lake Vermilion.

MEMORIAL SERVICE:3 p.m. Friday Oct. 15, 2004 in the Chapel at Grand Village Nursing Home. Burial at Lakeview Cemetery in Coleraine. Ellen requested that memorials be made in lieu of flowers. Memorials are preferred to Community Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, 520 NE 2nd Ave., Grand Rapids, MN. 218-326-4000.
